Tea Stories

Tea in Russia January 14 2017

When Ruth and I travelled to Russia and Siberia, every town we landed in would greet us with bread, salt and vodka as we stepped off the helicopter. Then when we arrived at our  accommodation (in one City it was a Mental Hospital), they would serve us hot, black tea, and as milk was only permitted for old people and children in those days, we were usually given a small pot of jam (or jelly as it is called in the States). We acquired a taste for this warming brew, which was usually served from a very ornate Samovar. In fact, we were given several Samovars as gifts at some of our stops. It's interesting to know that I was not classified as "old" then, and didn't qualify for milk.

More good news about black tea January 12 2017

Black tea is thought to help reduce atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, and to slow or prevent osteoporosis. It may also help prevent the formation of kidney stones. Some studies suggest there is a link between black tea and a reduced risk of lung cancer, Parkinson's disease and diabetes, according to WebMD.

The health benefits of green tea January 03 2017

There is little doubt about the super prowess of the green brew, which makes it so popular. Since green tea is made from unfermented tea leaves, scientists at the University of Maryland Medical Centre crown it as the brew with the most potent concentration of polyphenol antioxidants, which fight free radicals, damage DNA, cause aging, cancer, stroke and heart disease.

To combat that sugar rush January 02 2017

Green tea with a slice of lemon is a diuretic, which means you will take more bathroom breaks than usual. It forces your body to pump nutrients and waste products through your kidneys faster and eliminate the sugar from your system. And remember to stay well hydrated with water also.

The gift of tea December 26 2016

On the run up to Christmas, I was amazed to find out how many gift ideas there were out there relating to tea, not only the tea itself, but the many and varied products that are being sold both in high end stores and online.  Some of them were in the range of several hundreds of dollars for the person who has almost everything. Amazon in particular seems to excel in these goods. I may start praying to the Patron Saint of Teabags that some day ....

Cancer Research December 15 2016

Did you know that squeezing a lemon wedge into your tea turns your hot (or iced) drink into an even more powerful superfood? Lemon increases tea's levels of catechins (antioxidants) available for your body to absorb. Research shows catechins - found in white, green and black tea - are more powerful than vitamins C and E in terms of stopping cell damage that can lead to cancer, and may also help fight heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels.

Hot tea December 14 2016

Piping hot Chai holds a warm place in the heart of India. Although it might sound that a scorching hot beverage be so widely enjoyed in one of the world's warmest countries, chai actually cools the body. It does so by raising core body temperature above ambient air temperature. But the best part of the course is the exotic tapestry of spice that weaves through each flavorful sip.

From Winston Churchill December 09 2016

A lady once said to him: "If I was your wife, I would put poison in your tea." To which he replied: "Madam, if you were my wife, I'd drink it."

Monday morning musings... December 07 2016

I decided to try using some green tea matcha in a sponge cake. I used a store bought sponge cake mixture and sprinkled a little matcha into it, which gave it a delightful greenish hue. For the filling I mixed up a little apple sauce and sour cream. Then I sprinkled the top with a little more of the green tea matcha and we really enjoyed the result.

Some Royal pointers about tea December 06 2016

I read that today, Queen Elizabeth II likes to begin her day at 7:30 a.m. with her breakfast tray of tea and a couple of biscuits (cookies to the Americans). Afternoon tea at the Palace (or wherever she is in residence) is at 4 p.m., with scones, cakes or canapes, when she usually spends time with her beloved corgis.

The words of Henry James December 03 2016

"There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea."
