Tea Stories
More from George Orwell March 09 2017
"I know very well that I am in a minority here. But still, hhow can you call yourself a true tea-lover if you destroy the flavor of your tea by putting sugar in it? It would be equally reasonable to put pepper or salt. Tea is meant to be bitter just as beer is meant to be bitter. If you sweeten it, you are no longer tasting the tea, you are merely tasting the sugar; you could make a ver similar drink by dissolving sugar in plain hot water."

Another cup of light March 08 2017
The first cup of the day is often shy and light. So don't hurry ... a gentle prelude is just the thing to begin with. As you add milk, you watch the wonder brew come alive in all its majesty. All that's left then is too give in to the charm, and unravel the secrets sip by sip.Brew a cup of Life March 07 2017
Tea is sunlight held together by water. It sifts through your being and lights up your mood. It inspires poems, stirs up observations and kicks off the day. It gently awakes, bit by bit in a teapot filled with boiling water, so take your time as you brew one big up of life.George Orwell March 06 2017
"I maintain that one strong cup of tea is better than 20 weak ones. All true tea-lovers mot only like their tea strong, but like it a little stronger with each year that passes."

Cartage March 05 2017
In the 17th century, the journey between India and Britain took about 12 to 15 months. Transportation costs and extremely high taxes made tea such an expensive product that only rich people could afford to drink it. However, later in the 18th century, taxes were reduced, and the the Suez Canal opened in 1869, reducing the journey to about three months thus making it much more affordable to the masses.

Caddy spoons March 03 2017
Caddy spoons were often shaped like a seashell. Some of them were also made out of fine filigree in the days when dust (or "mote") was still a problem. There were many very artistic designs, carved out of tortoiseshell, pearl, ivory, and in sterling silver and silver plate. Many people made them collector's items, and still do.Mote Spoons March 02 2017
Mote spoons (which were used before the introduction of the tea caddy) were designed to rid the tea leaves of the accompanying dust, also known as "mote". They were usually long handled spoons with delicately curved bowls so that the dust could be sifted out from between the leaves before the tea was brewed.
The narrow handle could also be used to push the tea leaves back down the spout of a teapot, to again wallow in the boiling water and make the brew stronger.

"Growing up in Ireland, when my family received important news, good or bad, we would boil water and make tea. It was the first thing I did when my father died in 1984. This ritual allowed me a moment to take in the enormity of what had happened."Harold Munro "Milk For The Cat" February 23 2017
